There’s quite a bit of physical comedy here, some of it uninspired, some of it quite funny. Perry uses a sort of worried, thoughtful deadpan while Willis’ is drier and more courtly. What’s important is how I get along with the people who are still alive.”īoth Perry and Willis play their roles deadpan, which makes the lines sound funnier than they really are. “It’s not important how many people I’ve killed. Later Jimmy shares his philosophy of life: Oz explains that, as a dentist, he tries “to keep things as painless as possible.” And Jimmy, without bothering to specify his line of work, replies, offhandedly, “Me too.” When Oz and Jimmy first meet, for example, they talk shop. There’s enough incidental charm and humor in the dialogue and the performances to distract you from screenwriter Mitchell Kapner’s implausible, ramshackle storyline. But if The Whole Nine Yards comes up short in the plot department, it does have a saving grace – or, rather, a partly saving grace.
